About Crete Island

Crete is the largest island of Greece and the 5th largest in the Mediterranean Sea. The Capital and largest city is Heraklion. Located south on the Aegean Sea while on the north of the Libyan. It is sepereted in the prefectures of Iraklion, Hania, Lasithi and Rethymno, covering an area of 8.336 km ². The population is 601,131 people (census 2001), while the island is 260 km long and varies in width from 60 km (measured from the Dion cape to cape Stone), at only 12 km in the isthmus of Ierapetra in the eastern Crete. Crete is located about 160 km south of the Greek mainland.
